What Is Breath Alcohol Testing?

Breath alcohol testing is used to determine current alcohol concentration and potential impairment. For DOT programs, breath alcohol testing must be performed using approved procedures and qualified Breath Alcohol Technicians.

goMDnow provides breath alcohol testing for DOT-regulated employers, CDL drivers, non-DOT workplace programs, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, random testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing.

When Breath Alcohol Testing Is Used

DOT and non-DOT employers commonly use breath alcohol testing for random testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, follow-up testing, and workplace alcohol policies.

For DOT-regulated employees, alcohol testing rules are strict and documentation must be handled properly to remain compliant.

DOT Alcohol Testing Requirements

DOT alcohol testing must be performed by a qualified Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT) using an approved evidential breath testing device (EBT). Results must follow a two-step confirmation process and be properly documented.

DOT breath alcohol concentration (BAC) thresholds:

0.02
Screening threshold
A result of 0.02 or above triggers a confirmation test. Driver must stop safety-sensitive functions until confirmation.
0.04
Violation threshold
A confirmed result of 0.04 or above is a DOT violation. Driver is immediately removed from safety-sensitive duty and must complete the RTD process.
Important: A result between 0.02 and 0.039 is not a DOT violation but requires the driver to be removed from safety-sensitive duty for at least 24 hours. The employer must not allow the driver to return until a subsequent test shows below 0.02.
