What Is Urine Drug Testing?

Urine drug testing is the most widely accepted method for detecting recent drug use. For DOT-regulated testing, urine testing is the federally recognized standard method used under U.S. Department of Transportation rules.

goMDnow provides both DOT and non-DOT urine drug testing programs for transportation employers, owner-operators, construction companies, staffing agencies, healthcare employers, manufacturers, and other safety-sensitive workplaces.

DOT vs Non-DOT Urine Drug Testing

DOT urine drug testing must follow strict federal collection, chain-of-custody, laboratory, and MRO review requirements. It is commonly used for pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.

Non-DOT urine drug testing is based on an employer’s workplace policy and may include different panels, substances, or testing reasons depending on company requirements and applicable state law.

5-Panel and 10-Panel Testing

The DOT urine test is a 5-panel test screening for the federally required drug categories. Non-DOT employers may choose 5-panel, 10-panel, or customized configurations based on industry risk and workplace policy.

DOT 5-Panel (federally required)
  • Marijuana (THC)
  • Cocaine
  • Opiates (codeine, morphine, heroin)
  • Amphetamines (including methamphetamine)
  • Phencyclidine (PCP)
Non-DOT 10-Panel additions
  • Barbiturates
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Methadone
  • Methaqualone
  • Propoxyphene

goMDnow supports both 5-panel and 10-panel configurations for DOT and non-DOT programs. All DOT drug test results are reviewed by a certified Medical Review Officer (MRO) before being reported to the employer.

Common Reasons for Testing

Urine testing is commonly used for pre-employment screening, random testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, periodic testing, return-to-duty testing, follow-up testing, and drug-free workplace programs.
